Common Core State Standards for ELA
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds on a specific verse or stanza of a poem or selection of a story or drama.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.5 Analyze how dramas or poem’s form or structure contributes to its meaning.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.7.1 Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.7.3 Analyze the interactions between individuals, events, and ideas in a text (e.g., how ideas influence individuals or events, or how individuals influence ideas or events).

Students will practice using the TPCASTT technique to aid them in understanding the meaning behind Maya Angelou’s poem.
Purpose/Objective of the Lesson:
Students will be able to apply the TPCASTT method to one of Maya Angelou’s poems to successfully gain an understanding of how her background influenced her writing.

What problem-solving strategies can individuals use to manage conflict and change?
Lesson Essential Question: How does an author’s background and style impact their writing?
Key Questions for this lesson:
- What is the symbolism in the poem? What examples can you find to support your claim?
- Describe the mood of the poem with textual examples.
- Locate 2 examples of imagery in the poem. What are they describing to you?
- What did you notice about Maya Angelou’s style? Do you think her background influenced her writing?
